Eastern Traditional Medicines have long valued the humble walnut as both a highly nutritious food to enhance health and also as one that can be helpful in the treatment of many illnesses.
Western science is now catching up as it is starting to deliver many studies on how important this variety of nut is to benefiting health. We will be taking a look at lots of these studies that in particular relate to cancer in future blogs.

We will start with one study carried out by Paul Davis and colleagues at the University of California Davis Cancer Center; and appearing in the Journal of Medicinal Food.
Davis fed a diet with walnuts to mice that had been altered to get prostate tumours. After 18 weeks, the researchers found that when the mice consumed the human equivalent of just over 2 ounces of walnuts per day - it resulted in significantly smaller, slower-growing prostate tumours in comparison to mice consuming the same diet with an equal amount of fat, but not from walnuts.
The growth of the prostate cancer was not only reduced by 30 to 40 percent, but the walnut fed mice also had lower blood levels of IGF-1, a particular protein which is seen to be strongly associated with prostate cancer.
On top of this, the scientific researchers looked at the effect of walnuts on gene activity in the tumours using whole mouse gene chip technology. They found there had been beneficial effects on multiple genes which relate to controlling tumour growth.

Walnuts have a special place in Chinese Medicine; they are seen as having greater significance than other nuts because of their unusual flavour. Most members of the nut family are mildly bland or sweet tasting, but walnuts have their own unique oily bitter taste.
In Chinese Medicine different flavours create different reactions in the human body. The bitter taste is seen to detox, to clear waste (like mutated cells) from the body; just as seen with other detoxifiers like green tea and pomegranate which also taste bitter. I will be talking much more about how significant the bitter taste is and how it causes its effect in future articles. (I will also discuss in detail how it can help to play a major part in the prevention and treatment of cancer.)
Clean, unprocessed natural oil in Chinese Medicine is seen to nourish, moisten, feed, gently energize, relax, protect, slow aging and to promote hormones in the body.
Walnuts are quite unique, they have both a very nutritious oil which helps keep your system strong and at the same time cleansing properties which help it to detox; whether you are sick or not, this ordinary food has an important place in any healthy diet.
So my advice is to simply add small amounts of this health enhancing food into your daily diet. It is yet another easy simple addition to help as part of any cancer treatment. You can easily snack on them with other nuts and dried fruits and berries; or mix them into your cooking and meals.
