Frequently Asked Questions
At The Leixlip Acupuncture And
Chinese Medicine Clinic ...
Do I have to believe in Acupuncture for it to work ?
No, although having a positive mental outlook can help you heal faster; belief in acupuncture is not necessary. Acupuncture will still work whether you believe in it or not.
It is not simply a placebo effect. It works on babies and animals who would have no preconceived ideas of its' effectiveness. Even patients in comas are treated with Acupuncture in the East.

Can I get Chinese Medicine at the same time I am receiving Western Medicine ?
Yes, as long as you go to a properly qualified practitioner, there will be no negative interactions between Chinese Treatments (including herbs) and any Western Medical treatments and drugs you may be receiving. Chinese and Western treatments are often mixed in hospitals and clinics in China. For example, patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy often also receive Chinese Herbs, Acupuncture and QiGong as well.
I have been receiving other Western treatments for a long time for a chronic condition but it still has not improved. Could Chinese Medicine work for it ?
Yes, Chinese Medicine takes a very different approach to many of the treatments available in the West. Just because you have not been able to successfully overcome an ailment through Western Medicines does not mean you have to give up and live with that condition. Chinese Medicine often helps to treat illnesses that other medical systems could not.

Is Chinese Medicine suitable for everyone ?
Yes, it does not matter how young or old you are; from babies to senior citizens.
If you are a pregnant woman or are a breastfeeding mother, then Chinese Medicine from a qualified practioner is also perfectly safe. Indeed Chinese Medicine can treat a wide range of ailments during pregnancy and after the birth of the baby.
Chinese Medicine can be used by anyone at anytime.
How many treatments will I need to get before I start to see improvements in my condition ?
In my clinic, generally most people would see an improvement after the first session and the majority of those who are left will have seen an improvement after the second one.
There are no set number of treatments for any particular ailments. But usually after seeing how quickly a patient is responding after sessions then it normally becomes possible to give them an estimate as to how long it will take to rectify their issues.
Do I need to make any preparations before receiving Acupuncture ?
It is best to wear loose clothing. Avoid wearing tight trousers and tops which cannot be comfortably pulled up to the level of your knees and elbows.
It is also wise to avoid any excessively demanding conditions just before or after treatments, such as intense exercises.

Do Acupuncture needles hurt ?
No, Acupuncture needles when inserted by a skilled practitioner should not hurt. They are tiny needles. In the picture below you can see that about twenty Acupuncture needles could fit into the opening of one single hypodermic syringe needle, commonly used in Western Medicine to withdraw blood or to inject chemicals into the body.
However, make sure you go to a fully qualified and skilled Acupuncturist for your treatment. There are now unfortunately others in non Chinese Medical therapies who are offering needling treatments to their clients. It takes years of training to become proficient in using needles safely and painlessly. Most of these other therapists are not properly skilled or fully trained in needling techniques nor in Chinese Medical Theories, so you are taking a chance by attending them for any Acupuncture style treatment.
Sometimes at my clinic in Leixlip, I get nervous patients who due to past bad experiences with western injections are afraid of the needles. Once they have had a treatment and they see it is not just a pain free experience but also a relaxing one, then their fear of needles completely vanishes !

Can I get Chinese Treatments like Acupuncture And Herbs to keep myself healthy and strong ?
Yes, Chinese Medicine is great at boosting general health and well-being in the body and mind. Many clients of mine come for treatments just to keep themselves in top health. Chinese Herbal tonics are particularly good for this.
I personally take a Chinese Herbal mixture every morning as part of my own health regime. I find it to be very effective.
Clients are welcome to get a check up and then get a herbal formula tailor made for them, which they can take daily to keep their internal systems running in good shape.
How often do I need to come in for treatments ?
It depends on the condition you have and the type of treatment that is required. Generally I will use a combination of treatments, such as Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs together. Normally I will see a patient once a week, but on request as soon as I see reasonable progress in their condition I will extend the Acupuncture sessions to once every second or third week. This helps to keep costs low for the client.
If a patient is just receiving Herbs then usually they will come for an initial consultation and will be given enough herbs to last them for two to three weeks. If more are required they will receive a brief follow up free consultation to see if their herbs need to be altered as their conditions change, and then they will only be charged for the new tub of herbs needed.
Are my medical and personal details kept private ?
Yes, all your medical and other information will be confidential. The Leixlip Chinese Medicine Clinic only sees one client at a time, therefore your conversations will be held in complete privacy. Residents from Leixlip, Lucan, Celbridge, Maynooth, Dublin and other areas can rest assured that their information will be treated respectfully and not discussed with others.

How do I find a really good practitioner ?
As my blog is read by many international viewers I have decided to write a few lines on how they can find a good Chinese Medical Practitioner near them.
Firstly start with their qualifications, make sure they come from legitimate Chinese Medicine colleges.
Practitioners from other fields of therapy are often now claiming to be acupuncturists, but they are not qualified in acupuncture or Chinese Medicine. These therapists may have done as little as three months of acupuncture study. This produces a very inferior and illegitimate quality of acupuncture which often causes painful and unproductive treatments for the patient. It may even cause long term damage. Unfortunately some of these other therapists through bad treatments have caused damage to the good reputation of legitimate Chinese Medical practitioners. So please do look for someone who has the proper qualifications in Chinese Medicine and who has studied acupuncture for a minimum of three years.
Then check to see if they are part of a register. There may be several registers in your country; but a quick search on Google usually shows the main ones.
The really passionate people who love Chinese Medicine also tend to make the best practitioners. A very good reflection of their keen interest is shown if they have qualifed in several areas of Chinese Medicine. There are four main branches - Chinese Herbalism, Tui Na Medical Massage, Medical QiGong and Acupuncture. So it is often good to look for someone qualified in more than one of these fields of practice.
Finally, in your sessions be sure to ask plenty of questions. If your practitioner can answer them with ease in a sensible and logical way then usually you will have found a good one who understands Chinese Medicine well.
Also look to see if they generally rush you or show disinterest in your questions, this is always a sign of a bad doctor in any form of medicine. Doctors are here to help their patients, not to intimidate or look down on them.
