Two studies published in the journals "Cancer Research" and the "Journal Of Nutrition" by researchers at the Beckman Research Institute in California, found that mice fed diets containing 5 to 10% blueberry powder had significantly reduced growth and spread of their aggressive triple negative breast cancer cells.
These type of breast cancer cells are highly resistant to chemotherapy and account for about 10% of all breast cancer cases.

During the studies at the cancer center, groups of mice with breast tumours were either fed or denied blueberries.
The researchers, led by Dr. Lynn Adams, found that the mice in the groups receiving blueberry powder had 60 to 75% smaller tumours than the groups of mice who had received no blueberries in their diets.
During molecular studies the scientists also found that there were significant differences in the gene patterns of the mice who had been fed blueberries. These genes related to the slowing down of the growth and spread of the cancer cells.

The human equivalent of the 5% blueberry diet that the mice were fed is about the same as two cups of fresh blueberries per day.
